Es un s\u00f3lido transparente, duro y fr\u00e1gil. Es v\u00edtreo por debajo de 100\u00a0\u00b0C. Por encima de esta temperatura es f\u00e1cilmente procesable y puede d\u00e1rsele m\u00faltiples formas.<\/p>\n<p>Para mejorar la resistencia mec\u00e1nica del material, se puede a\u00f1adir en la polimerizaci\u00f3n hasta un 14% de caucho (casi siempre polibutadieno). El producto resultante se llama poliestireno de alto impacto (HIPS, High Impact Polystyrene, siglas en ingl\u00e9s). Es m\u00e1s fuerte, no  quebradizo y capaz de soportar impactos m\u00e1s violentos sin romperse. Su  inconveniente principal es su opacidad, si bien algunos fabricantes venden grados especiales de poliestireno choque transl\u00facido.<\/p>\n<p>Otro miembro de esta familia es el poliestireno expandido (EPS, siglas en ingl\u00e9s). Consiste en 95% de poliestireno y 5% de un gas que forma burbujas que reducen la densidad del material. Su aplicaci\u00f3n principal es como aislante en construcci\u00f3n y para el embalaje de productos fr\u00e1giles.<\/p>\n<p>A partir de poliestireno cristal fundido se puede obtener, mediante inyecci\u00f3n de gas, una espuma r\u00edgida denominada poliestireno extruido (XPS). Sus propiedades son similares a las del EPS, con el cual compite en las aplicaciones de aislamiento.Pero a diferencia del EPS, el poliestireno extruido presenta burbujas  cerradas, por lo que puede mojarse sin perder sus propiadades aislantes,  motivo por el cual ha posibilitado la aparici\u00f3n de las cubiertas invertidas.<\/p>\n<p>Propiedades t\u00e9rmicas:<\/p>\n<p>El poliestireno \u00abcompacto\u00bb (sin inyecci\u00f3n de gas en su interior) presenta la conductividad t\u00e9rmica m\u00e1s baja de todos los termopl\u00e1sticos.<sup> <\/sup>Las espumas r\u00edgidas de poliestireno XPS presentan valores aun m\u00e1s bajos de conductividad, incluso menores de 0,03 W K<sup>-1<\/sup> m<sup>-1<\/sup>, por lo que se suele utilizar como aislante t\u00e9rmico.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, tiene relativamente poca resistencia a la temperatura,  ya que reblandece entre 85 y 105\u00a0\u00b0C (el valor exacto depende del  contenido en aceite mineral).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>El producto de la polimerizaci\u00f3n del estireno puro se denomina poliestireno cristal o poliestireno de uso general (GPPS, siglas en ingl\u00e9s).
